Ultrasonic cleaning may be the most effective and fastest way to clean gemstones
Ultrasonic cleaning may be the most effective and fastest way to clean gemstones. However, ultrasonic cleaners are not suitable for cleaning all types of precious stones. The following gemstones that should never be put in an ultrasonic cleaner:
Pearls Just like the human teeth, gucci
pearls are mostly made up of the calcium. The tooth enamel is mostly calcium phosphate, which is relatively harder. Teeth can be cleaned using ultrasonics. On the other hand, Pearl is composed of calcium carbonate. The same is true for mother of pearls. They are very soft, and as fragile as an egg shell.
Opal Suspended water molecules within the gemstone give opals their unique luster. This makes opal different to most precious stones, which derive their brilliance as a result of the presence of trace metals. Using ultrasonics on opals would cause these water molecules to damage the gemstone.
Amber These are made of fossilized resin. Amber stones are very soft. Just like opal, it contains trace amounts of water. Cleaning with ultrasonics may damage amber due to the heat and cavitation involved in the process.
Tanzanite This gem is heated during treatment to produce a range of colors. Ultrasonic cleaning may degrade the color quality of Tanzanite gems.
Emerald Oil is used as a coating when treating this stone. Ultrasonic cleaning may damage or remove this enhancement treatment.
Peridot This gem is quite sensitive to changes in temperature. This property makes ultrasonic cleaning unsuitable for Peridot.
Agate This a hard, yet brittle gemstone. Like Peridot, Agate is also sensitive to drastic changes in temperature.
Amazonite Named after the Amazon river, these greenish gemstones lose their quality during abrupt changes in temperature. Do not put Amazonite in an ultrasonic cleaner.
Topaz This gemstone is relatively harder than other types of precious stones. Cavitation will not damage topaz during ultrasonic cleaning. However, prolonged exposure to heat may cause this gemstone to pale in color.
Aquamarine Just like topaz, this precious stone is sensitive to heat. The heat generated from ultrasonic cleaning may fracture this gemstone.
Turquoise Similar to topaz and aquamarine, exposure to heat will cause this gemstone to lose its color and luster.
Also, do not use ultrasonic cleaners on gemstones that have cracks or fractures. Putting such stones in the cleaner may worsen their condition. If you are unsure whether or not ultrasonic cleaning is suitable for your jewelry, always consult your jeweler.
