Attention! Avoid and report scammers, camgirls, spambots and other jerks. Never send money. Read these tips and help us make 4ppl clean.

Scammers

iamyoursxoxo

They Might be a scammer IF.

THEY MIGHT BE A SCAMMER IF…
If you can answer YES to more than two of these you are dealing with a scammer.

When Contact is First Made:

They immediately want to get off the website and onto Yahoo IM or MSN IM

Their profile seems to disappear off the website immediately after conversation begins

They claim it was destiny or fate and you are meant to be together

They immediately ask for your picture and they send you a picture of themselves

They immediately want your address so as to send you flowers, candy, and teddy bears, often purchased with stolen credit cards

They claim to love you either immediately or within 24-48 hours

They immediately start using pet names with you: hon/hun baby/babe sweety/sweetie

They claim God brought you to him/her

They typically claim to be from the US (or your local region) but they are overseas, or going overseas mainly to Nigeria, sometimes the UK for business or family matters

Communication Skills:

Their spelling is atrocious

Their grammar is not consistent with how Americans speak, French speak etc.

They appear uneducated with their speaking/writing skills

They over-use emoticons

They are notorious for using BUZZ

They are notorious for using “i” instead of “I”

They consistently use webspeak or abbreviations; u r ur cos pls/plz ma sry brb div acc

They often mix up their phrases: “i” will like to heer from you soonest, I am kool, Do you have anyman you care to meet, Do you have any man you planning to meet, Looking for someone to love and care for in life, Am cheerfull in life, I will like to meet someone that is careing and loveing for real in life, “i” am too young for my age if you don’t know, Ok so how will you feel if i says i dont mind you, i will like you to be my best friend, You are so pretty for my likeness

They misunderstand our slang or comparisons such as night owl/early bird, poker face

Their Habits:

They are not usually around on the weekends to IM

They IM at unusual hours for your time zone

There are times they are gone from the conversation for a length of time and will sometimes come back at you with a different name, they’re usually conversing with more than one person at a time

If you ask them a question they don’t know they will usually be offline for a length of time so they can go look up the answer on the internet always claiming they had a phone call or had to go to the bathroom etc.

They like to send you poems or love letters, most of which can be traced back to lovingyou.com. Sometimes they even forget to change the name in the poem or letter to match your name

They send you flowers, teddy bears, and candy within the first few weeks of talking

They typically ask you to get on your webcam yet they never seem to have a webcam of their own

They ask for your phone number but when they call you can barely understand a word they say because of their accent and back ground noise

They may give you a phone number but it’s typically a calling card or a call center, you can rarely get them on the phone

They do not like to answer personal questions about themselves and tend to ignore questions

They often do not know the correct time difference between where you are and where they claim to be

They often claim to have one parent that is of African descent

A majority of them claim to have lost a spouse/child/parent in a horrific traffic accident or airplane accident or any of the above are sick or in the hospital

They have no close family or friend or business associates to turn to, even the US embassy, instead they can only rely on a stranger they picked off the internet

To them love equals financial assistance…if you do not send them money or help them out with what they ask, you do not love them

If you deny them or question them they become verbally abusive and will resort to threats

They will insist you keep the relationship a secret until “they” come to you live with you

Above all, if you call them a scammer they are highly offended and some will start throwing words at you in their native language
Their Inconsistencies:

The details they give you on IM are often different that what was stated on their profiles, one of the more common ones they give different answers to is their birth date, height/weight, and age etc.

If you catch them on an inconsistency they will claim a friend or relative must’ve been using their id to chat with you, they will always try to come up with a cover-up and of course, you are always wrong or mistaken

They often misspell the cities/towns they claim they are from and are unfamiliar with any of the local landmarks and attractions

They do not know common questions that every US citizen would know the answer to.

Very true.watch out for the my mother is ill in hospital in africa, I live with my aunt or grandmother, and after two emails they "have spoken with my parents and theya re very ahppy for me to come to you" and then say that they have a visa and ticket, but they can not afford the travel insurance which is normally about 900 euro's!! and when you tell them they don't need it if they are with you, they say they wont be allowed to leave the country without it!

Also I was in the UK, but now I am in.....

Hi,
One of the main problems of a datingsite is to keep the scammers away. I've the same problem.
To keep the site clean is a huge problem and honestly, I really don't know the 'real' solution.
I wanna have my (new) site free or with a small one-time fee. Its clear that free option opens the door for scammers, the fee based model will keep the most of them out.
I planned to open the site free for profiles, but to write and receive emails you need to pay a membership fee (low, even a one time entrance fee will be good for us), and as far as I can see this will keep most scammers away, since they need to pay first. But of course, the scammers that make good money from this, can afford to pay a small fee.
We cannot check every profile....
Any good ideas or suggestions are highly appreciated.

And yes, my english is far from perfect, but my dutch is great:-)

longben, I belive the idea of captcha(sp) what myspace uses as a user preferance - you know, its the one where you type the pictured words into a box. that can be one idea. tho it does in fact suck for those with vision problems. but, just an idea.
I do have this far fetched idea, it origiates from leisure suit larry where it asks questions for age verifaction. remember, its just an idea of how to Question. literally Question on what you should know based on the topic. such as location. (sigh)
anyhow. take care all.

Right on the money, Lars. Have seen quite a few in a short time, and all of them are operating from a similar script.

Another one is "I'm really from America, but I'm studying/working/have family in Lagos...", only phrased more poorly than any American. When I questioned that with one, she claimed "well i was educated in italy", so I started responding in Italian. Bet that sent that one to Babelfish quickly. :-)

so true what you say

one person tried to scam me in swedish to when she/he got to know I was from finland, but he/she did no realice people from finland can speak swedish to. was quite funny though.

on topic.

any mail that seem way to long and that have parts where she tells you of tradig deaths in family, is most likely a scam mail.

wow!! it's actually refreshing to not only get relevant information but to see other who feel the same way. Keep on rooting out the scammers. Trouble is that most of these scammers have amassed million of dollars from us hard working guys. To actually catch and prosecute them is the hard job. I'd love to post your list by my computer and just start putting check marks when I get an email. Googling the person's supposed name will help a bit as well. I feel bad for the honest folk out there who are getting a bad name from the scammers. Keep up the great work and on behalf of us honest folk Thank You Thank You Thank You.

Unfortunately there is no way to stop these scammers from Africa as long as their IP adresses work. I was living in Nigeria and went on a site I with in Ireland, all I ever got was site closed for improvement. When I arrived back to Ireland on holidays there was no problem accessing the site so it is possible and would clear out over 90% of scammers.

P.S my late dad left me $100,000,000,000, and I would like to share it with you just send all your financial info to me. Am honest man i,

your killing them with this one!!! it was just before I joined this site i thought something was up with a woman that wrote me on yahxx personals,i needed some answers and i came across a similar site maybe it was romancescams.org and me being the nice guy that I am,lol I forwarded her what the definition of a romance scam was and how it usually takes place.........when she did write back she wasnt very happy and said i offended her......well you win some and you lose some but life goes on.
if you are really worried about being scammed go back to the top and read what (iamyoursxoxo) left here as things to watch out for and if you can answer yes to two of those things.....................you already know!!

good job

Hi all,
Tho we are creatures of habit - sometimes.
There are times of adaptation, so, with that in mind.
Feel free to post anything new they say as a tactic to hurt you.
This in turn protects US all.
For that, I thank you.
