Two monks are traveling down a dirt road dressed in white monk garb. It had rained for days so the road was still wet and muddy with puddles strewn across it. Now, being monks they had to follow a strict guideline as to there behavior and one huge rule to them was that they must never hold a woman.
Anyways, the monks are cruising down the road step by step when they come across a huge puddle that spanned the entire road. Across from them was a girl in a beautiful dress who seemed frantic and confused. Obviously, she could not cross the puddle without ruining her dress.
So, the first monk stepped into the puddle and crossed it to stand by the lady. He picked her up and said, "hold on tight" as he carried her unblemished to the other side of the puddle.
The other monk just looked at the first monk with disgust as he saw him holding the woman.
The woman thanked the monk and he smiled then turned to cross the puddle again with the other monk at his side.
The two monks traveled further but there was an uneasy silence between them. Then the second monk spoke,"you have broken your vows, it is written that you must not hold a woman."
The first monk smiled at him and continued to travel.
After awhile the other monk spoke again and said,"You must think it a joke to have such vows. You have wronged us by your trespass."
The first monk again just smiled and kept walking.
Finally after a little bit the second monk looked at the first monk and yelled, " You have vowed not to hold onto a woman and you have violates our sacred vow...What say you monk?"
The first monk looked at the other and softly said, "I did not view her as a woman to hold, merely as a person to help. It is you that continue to hold on to her even now as your mind thinks. It is you that must let her go."
Moral: Holding on to someone can be more than physical, beware not letting them go.
