Stories, Opinion, Advice

Anyone have some stories about online relationships? I’d like to find out if there’s any patterns, or common mistakes. I’ve had one long distance, long term relationship that was kind of crazy. In Junior High school I was getting into Anime and other aspects of Japanese culture. Until finally I went onto a website to look for a penpal – online correspondence type of thing so I could learn more. Well, it was kind of cool but nothing serious. People come and go. But I met this girl, we were both 16. Our correspondence lasted over the years as we graduated. She went to College while I joined the Airforce. We started seeing each other – she’d come to the United States to live with me. We couldn’t have gotten along better. I took a week off work to go on a road trip, down south to Oregon to visit family and long time friends. They loved her, and again – everything was great. This went on for a few more years. Then I left my country to move to Japan. I didn’t want to separate her from friends, family, and college. Since my college was online, and people on my side was used to me being gone anyways. But for the first time we had some serious problems. Her family absolutely abhorred me. And the women was so reliant on her mother for everything, that she couldn’t think for herself at all. Ultimately we fall apart, and it was the most disastrous thing that ever happened to me. Bitterness is such a wasted emotion, but all those years that went by of us struggling to make a long distance relationship work, just to let such a stupid thing ruin it for us. I can’t wait until this becomes ancient history. When I stop waking up in the morning to feel a ring on my finger that’s no longer there. The worst aspect is, will I be able to detect the negative traits that she had, in a future significant other? History repeating itself doesn’t sound good to me at all. How does a person know, or – does it just depend on luck, and nothing else? Maybe I just need to go for an older women… Haha, I don’t really know.

That must have been hard experience for you. This might be a bit arrogant to say, but I can understand your feelings since I had same thing in my past.
The fact that you've tried to make her happy is wonderful, she must be thanking for the memories with you, and maybe suffering as much as you are.
Every single person has negative points, and pople make mistake, but also people can feel sorry and try to make it change, so let's believe in the future.
