But we have a plan. We'll call it theIntelligent Ballpark Use Movement IBUM, or Share Our StadiaSOS.The plan offers a massive upgrade for each team, from slum tomodern and fan-friendly facility, and requires zero newconstruction. There are hurdles, but for now let's focus on the positives, because it's not like any of the teams is on the verge of getting anew place.-- The 49ers move to Stanford Stadium, until they can buildtheir own palace. They'll lose 20,000 seats, moving into a 50,000-seater, but the49ers play in the biggest dump in the NFL - worst sightlines, worsteverything. We hear this is the first season in a few decades thatthere is no waiting list for 49ers' season tickets.Stanford gets a healthy infusion of cash at a time when minorsports are threatened with extinction. The 49ers' lease at the 'Stick is through 2014, but buyouts arealways possible, and each season in the old barn erodes the team'svalue.-- The Raiders move into the rebuilt CalMemorial Stadium. Both stadiums have the same capacity, but Memorial will offer anA-plus fan experience, while O.co is a C-minus.The Raiders and 49ers would lose luxuryboxes, but maybe catering to spoiled rich snobs in their isolationbooths is a movement worth reversing.-- The A's rent the Giants' ballpark. The Giants can use the dough. For A's fans, a hop across the baybeats a schlep to Fremont, San Jose, Sacramento orContractionville. The 49ers, Raiders and A's each have theirhearts set on an ego-building red Corvette. But maybe it's time toconsider car-pooling with the guy with the snazzy Prius.Terms & Conditions |Privacy |Copyright |? 2009 LexisNexis, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

HOLDERTimes Staff WriterTAMPA - Where were you in November 1999?Bill Clinton occupied the White House, and George W. Bush was ayear away from winning his first term. Gasoline prices, in thatpre-9/11 world, hovered around $1.50 per gallon. Defensive endDa'Quan Bowers, the youngest player on the Bucs' current roster, was 9 yearsold. Then, on Nov. 21, Tampa Bay cornerback Ronde Barber, after aone-week hiatus, returned to the starting lineup, and he hasn'tleft yet.News of Colts quarterback Peyton Manning being ruled out ofSunday's season opener means Barber will own the NFL's longestactive streak of consecutive regular-season starts. When the Bucs open against Detroit, Barberwill make his 184th straight start as Manning's stretch ends at208.Not that Barber is taking any bows."I'll let you pat me on the back," Barber told reportersWednesday, eager to avoid the subject. But the feat is undeniably impressive in a game as brutal asfootball, especially given Barber's position and diminutive stature(5 feet 10, 184 pounds)."Ronde, he's already legendary in my eyes anyway," coach RaheemMorris said. "When you talk about the cornerback position andplaying that long, that's certainly difficult. He's 46 years oldand he's still out there. He's older than his coach. "Barber actually is 36, still a senior citizen by NFL standards. He is, however, older than his coach. Morris turned 35 lastweek.Manning's stretch has been no less remarkable than Barber's,particularly because of his level of unmatched consistency. Beforesuccumbing to his current neck injury, Manning had started everygame of his 13-year career ."The best part about football is being out there on the fieldplaying with my teammates," Manning, 35, said in a statement. "Itwill be tough not to be out there playing for the organization andour fans. The team will do fine without me, and I know for surethat I will miss them much more than they miss me."Colts coach Jim Caldwell told reporters in Indianapolis: "He'sone of a kind. When you look across our league, most teams have hadquarterbacks that have missed time. Ours has just been highlyunusual."The Bucs would say the same about theirright cornerback.Barber has played through a litany of injuries over the years, some known, others not. In any case, he almost never misses apractice, barely even entertaining the notion. His ability to playin spite of pain and his good fortune to have avoided majorinjuries are rare, to say the least. There's evidence of that all around Barber. Just at hisposition, the Bucs saw Aqib Talib miss four gameswith a hip injury last season. Another cornerback, Myron Lewis, isin danger of missing Sunday's game because of an ankle sprain. AndE.J. Biggers, the nickel back, missed his entire rookie season witha shoulder injury. What makes Barber different?"I think it's all Ronde, the way he prepares himself, the way hetakes care of his body," Morris said. "All those things. RondeBarber has certainly been on very few injury reports, by hischoice. He forces his will on his body, and he forces his will onhis opponents . I've watched him finish the season with a torn kneeligament. I've watched him play through broken thumbs. "Barber, a five-time All-Pro, will go down in history for otherreasons. He's the only player to record 26 sacks and 40interceptions. His 11 touchdowns via fumble or interception returnsare second among active players and fourth all-time.But those achievements are, to an extent, a byproduct ofBarber's resiliency."He's one of the toughest guys," Morris said, "I've ever beenaround."latest-sports, breaking-newsTerms & Conditions |Privacy |Copyright |? 2009 LexisNexis, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
