Humans will be forced to live at a subsistent level and stick to the basics, which means goodbye to merchants, and hello to self-preservation.

One may deduce that population control is the key to managing human consumption. However, population control is still a delicate matter to tackle, as some religions in many developing nations prohibit birth control. So the best and most obvious solution to overpopulation is to lower the depletion rate of materials. Tapping new industries like renewable energy and improving recycling technologies will lead to lesser energy consumption. Governments should be adamant in finding alternative sources, and must cease bullying from energy moguls and cartels.

Another possible solution is change in lifestyle choices. Here, humans must address the issue of overconsumption at an individual level, and change their spending patterns. The government can only do so much. Change in consumption habits must start at a personal level. Good micromanagement leads to great macro-management. It doesn’t matter whether the government and the business sectors assume their antagonistic or supportive roles. Change happens when each person seriously takes the lead role.
