How do you handle scammers?

Hi there,

I'm sure everybody here on this site has already various experiences with scammers. I'm wondering .. how do you handle them? Do you just stop writing? Do you play with them until they give up? And how do you realize that the person on the other end is a scammer? Please tell me your "recipe" ...

As for me, I tend to play with them until they give up. I use several criteria to check if the other person is a scammer. One of my favourite criteria is to ask three questions in your first mail. In 99% of all cases those questions won't be answered .. guess why? lol

Good luck everybody!

There have been a number of good tips on handling them posted in these forums. There's a pretty standard MO I've found, and I've gotten to the point where I can sniff it out quickly.

Enough of them operate off Instant Messaging. One of them permits some security, but also has a "BUZZ" function. EVERY scammer that I've encountered -- without fail -- will figure out your IM name, and then send an instant BUZZ to you with a very poorly worded introduction. If I see that, I know and within about 10 messages back and forth, you're able to determine that they're Nigerian Romance Scams. I quickly end them (my time's too valuable). Another bloke here mentioned the criteria for what they say or how they approach, I won't repeat in this thread.

But basically I just block 'em and move on. I've already assumed that most scammers are so illiterate of the English language as to not compose a readable e-mail, and when I see the signs, I delete them.

Thanks for a good tip! I have found too many since I joined this site less than a year ago. I have a hard time to understand what they try to wrote me. Keep alert those scammers! Make sure don't send them money no matter what. I am about to give up this site!

One word of advice to you men do not go any further with those people. My computer ended up with a Very Nasty virus because of them. So now when I see the same old wording and everything I delete them just as fast.

they are not just on this site..but a lot of other ones also... And they are so easy to spot for me now, I can pick them out in their first email to me... they usually say that they were looking at your profile and fell in love or some such garbage... then they will tell you that they are working in w africa, nigeria or Ghana.... the only bad thing is that some of these guys can be dangerous there have been cases where the victim has had to be placed in protective custody due to threats made by these guys..But if you think the person is a scammer, but are not positive, here are some clues first, their english is horrible, second, most of tem have had a wife who cheated, or who died in a car wreck coming home from work (got that letter from 5 different ones) and then they are in love with you, they might not know your real name yet, but god sent you to them... once you figure out that they are scammers, delete them, block them and report them.. forward any email to spam@uce.gov. the government can trace the ip address, and they are wanting to go after these people...never send them money, or accept gifts from them.. thegifts are paid for with stolen cedit cards, and then you may end up doing jail time, as one lady did.. I think she served 2 years for accepting what she thought was a gift, turned out the feds considered it receiving stolen property.. take care, have fun and be safe

Most claim to be in the USA, so I just ask them geographical questions, like what state is next to theirs that they claim the are in, or simple things like what is President Bush’s middle name etc…..catch them every time

But generally you can smell them!

another good sign they are a scammer is if they tell you they live in the US but can't spell the name of the city or state they live in correctly..... just please remember that although the ones corresponding with you are uneducated, the ones who actually run the scams are not... and they can be dangerous.... as for the virus...it is true, if they have a messenger id for you, an you refuse them, they will infect your computer.. and sometimes the men will threaten you and your family, and they usually have a lot of info to tell you about the day to day lives of the family members they are threatening..... so never give them your home address or any kind of phone number that can be traced to your address... these people are not nice... this is a business to them, not just a way to pass the time.... although I have had fun playing with them, I delete them and put them on my ignore list as soon as they ask for money...some of my favorite reasons are got sick, had to go to the hospital, and they won't accept credit cards, got robbed and everything was stolen.... but my all time favorite was the one who spent all his money buying 30k gold bricks, and the government doesn't want the gold leaving africa, so he needed to ship it to me to hold for him...lol got rid of that one quickly.. and told him I didn't want his gold..... another one the girls will try is that they have been kidnapped and are being help prisoner..... but they don't want you to contact the police, just send money so they can escape

whenever, any girl send you message, and tell you that she just went accross your profile, and found that your sound look good, or you are look honest ..etc thats why she interested for you. or something like this.
my suggestion for you, if you have enough time you could play with them. if you play with them you will get not only more knowledge but also lots of experience. the scammers are fucking intalectual, they make story as if you never ever heard it before. so play with them
or you could say first time that money doesnot grow on the tree. or you are a homeless guy. or you might say you are fucking scammer to. etc

If their on this site report them.... go to their profile and click on report botton, you'll have a selection to choose from.... Don't answer their IMs... if they come from no-where/out of the blue.... Don't write to anyone that sends you their email address on the first or second letter, also... anyone that tries to get you off this site to talk to you.... Their emails, just delete them, but... remember to report them first. If your looking to date someone keep it local... If your looking to make friends online, you'll know that their real by the way they write, their profiles and their photo's.

I use to do what DARTDRAGONXXX said.... I use to play them to the hill and mess with them.... but I really found myself spending too much of my time doing so.... and there's to many of them out there... the cockroaches... So, I ignore them... here's a good thing to do, when you see them in blog's.... tell everyone who they really are and post it. They call them scam 'mer's... their more like scum 'mer's of the earth.

if you get an email address in the first message, 9 times of out 10 its a scam... normal dating "introduction" etiquette is too exchange a few messages first before exchanging emails... a lot more sites these days are doing a no email exchange policy until a 3rd message exchange has occurred...

cheers

Right here we go, I’ve been using computer and internet for a long time since 2000, I have checked out all the different ways in which scammers work on the fabulous internet sites so..if you travel to Africa for work or charity reasons, if you are from UK or USA and you got stuck in Africa, if u have a parent who has died and you need to get hold of money, if u want my address to send packages are to be shipped anywhere ,example Africa, or you want to send me a check and put in my account and then send the rest to you, if u fall in love with me or have strong feelings for me within 2-5 days, and calls me angel, baby anything sweet words. If you are ok and very wealthy, If you have kids and wife died on accident or messed up with somebody, If you don’t have a webcam and dont wanna be seen, If you struggle remembering name and wont you put your real pic on your profile, if u say you are from uk or usa and your English and spelling is totally shit, If u look like a model then you most probably are, something else etc, SCAMMERS, PLEASE GO AWAY AND DO SOME DECENT JOB.

I just tell them flat out...I'm NOT INTERESTED. They always want to divert you to some email address, or have you sign on to some other site, so you can't report them.
