History of Christmas Stockings

Christmas stockings are hung by children all across the world for Santa Claus to come and fill them with little presents and goodies. These presents are the little things that make children smile, as checking what the presents are is the first thing they do on Christmas mornings. These Christmas stockings have become a prominent part of the Christmas traditions. The traditions are followed by everyone all over the world, kids anticipate gifts from Santa and they love to wait for him and some even stock cookies and milk for Santa.

The tradition of Christmas stockings cannot be traced to a particular time in the history; these traditions are followed through the generations and are here to stay. The legend has it that there was a poor old man who used to live in a forest who had some serious financial constraints; the old man was so poor that he could only manage to make ends meet and couldn’t really save anything. The old man had three beautiful daughters who used to help their father with his work, the old man worried that he would never be able to get them married. He sulked and was losing his vitality to his worries. Saint Nickolas was passing by and he heard the old man crying and he also figured out why. Saint Nickolas had a solution to put an end to all the problems of the old man, he had three bag full of gold coins which he decided to give to the three daughters of the old man, to get them married. He stealthily crept into their homes and started looking for a place to keep the gold coins. He saw pairs of Christmas stockings on the metal bars and he decided to put the gold coins in them. The old man and his daughters were overjoyed on seeing the gold coins the next morning.

There are some families who still put gold coins in Christmas stockings as a tribute to the tradition; generally these stockings are filled with candies and other confectionaries, some Christmas stockings are really big and can accommodate big presents as well.
